「運命」という英語について、destiny、fortune、fate、doomの違いは？
「fate」「destiny」「fortune」はどれも運命と訳されますが、これらには違いがあるのでしょうか？

“fate”は、ラテン語の”fatum”に由来し、本来は「神の言葉」です。これが現在、「運命」の一般語として使われています。
もっとも気軽に「運」として使われ易い単語で、どんなちっぽけなコトでも使用可能なうえ、良くも悪くもとれる。
次に、”destiny”は、fate同様、ラテン語の”destinare”から派生した言葉で、de:下に+stinare:立たせる→決めておく→神が決めておくこと→運命となったのです。
ですから、”fate”も”desitiny”も神による「お告げ」というニュアンスです。
抗えない・不変の意味を持っていて、ドラマチックな出来事に向いており、あまり個人として「ツイていない」という感じで使わない。
しかし、”destiny”の方が、「確実にそうなる定め」という厳格な印象を与えます。
最後の、”fortune”は、同じくラテン語の”fors”（偶然）の変化形です。ですから、「運命」とは言っても、「偶然おきることによって決まる運命」、すなわち、「幸運」の意味合いが強くなります。
占いでもよく用いられるように、見えない未来の運という意味があり、誰もが幸運を期待することから luckに少し近い。
